Either way, you have three worries and they are the right ones: is it safe, will they actually use it, and what happens when something breaks. This guide answers those first, then gets specific about which of the four FRP kids’ models fits the child you are buying for.
The three things parents ask first
- Is it safe? Every kids’ model has a kill switch, disc brakes and a top speed between 13 and 20 mph. Both ATVs have an adjustable speed limiter, so a nervous first week can happen at walking pace. The rider still needs a fitted helmet, eye protection, gloves, long sleeves and boots, and an adult watching.
- Will they use it for more than a week? At our Rider Series events the kids who came for the cone course were still riding at closing time. A powered bike is a skill, not a toy, and kids keep coming back to things they are getting better at. It also grows with them: the MB40 rider at 6 is the GMB100 rider at 13.

Choose by the child, not just the age
All four models are built for ages 6 and up. What separates them is temperament, terrain and how the child already rides a bicycle.

Boys and girls ride the same bikes. There is no girls’ model and no boys’ model; the difference is color. Red, blue, purple and green are the popular kids’ picks and the Sahara 40 and FA40-NEO come in four colors each.
The 60-second fit check
- Seated, both feet flat or nearly flat on the ground.
- Hands on the grips with a slight bend at the elbow, not reaching.
- Can squeeze the brake lever fully with one hand.
- Can reach and use the kill switch without looking for it.
- Under the model’s rider weight limit with room to grow: MB40 165 lb, FX40 132 lb, Sahara 40 and FA40-NEO 143 lb.
If the child cannot do all five, go one step smaller or wait a season. A bike that is slightly small is a bike they can control; a bike they will “grow into” is a bike they cannot.

The reveal and the first ride
- Order early enough to inspect the box and assemble it before gift day. Halloween: order by October 16. Christmas: order by December 11.
- Assemble it the night before. Front wheel, fender, fork and handlebar, then the oil, fuel, brake and chain checks in the manual. Watch the First Ride Kit video for your model.
- Wrap the helmet. Lead them to the garage.
- First ride: flat ground, limiter low, engine off first so they learn the brake and the kill switch, then five minutes of throttle. Stop while they still want more.

One rule that never changes: every FRP bike and ATV is EPA-certified for off-road use on private property or designated riding areas. They are not street legal, and gas models do not ship to California. A properly fitted helmet, eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and over-the-ankle boots are required, and young riders need adult supervision.

Questions parents and gift-givers ask
What age can a kid ride a gas mini bike?
FRP kids’ models are built for ages 6 and up. Fit matters more than the number: the child should reach the ground and the handlebars comfortably, squeeze the brake fully and be under the model’s weight limit. Most 6-to-9-year-olds start on the MB40 or a 40cc ATV; 8-to-12-year-olds who already ride hard start on the FX40.
Is there a difference between mini bikes for boys and girls?
No. The bikes are the same; only the color is a choice. The MB40, FX40, Sahara 40 and FA40-NEO all come in several colors.
Mini bike, dirt bike or ATV: which is safest for a first ride?
The ATVs (Sahara 40 and FA40-NEO) give the parent the most control because of the adjustable speed limiter and four wheels. The MB40 is the simplest to learn. The FX40 is for a child who already has bicycle skills and wants trails. All of them require a helmet, protective gear, private property and adult supervision.
Can grandparents buy this without the parents knowing?
We would not. Agree on the model, storage and supervision with the parents, then keep the color and the reveal as your surprise. A powered vehicle should not arrive as a surprise responsibility.
Do I need a license or registration?
No license is needed for off-road use on private property. Rules for designated riding areas vary by state; check yours. FRP bikes are not street legal and gas models are not sold in California.
How long does assembly take?
MB40, FX40 and the ATVs arrive about 85% assembled. Plan 20–60 minutes with common tools, plus the checks in the manual.
