TL;DR
- Kids 40–50cc: about $280 to $2,200 new for a trail bike. The FRP Moto FX40 is $279.99–$299.99 with free shipping; a Yamaha PW50 or Honda CRF50F is $1,899 plus a $215–$300 destination charge.
- 110–140cc pit and trail bikes: $799.99 to $4,449 before freight or destination. The FRP Moto FX125 is $799.99–$1,099.99 and the FX140 is $1,149.99, plus $299.99–$399.99 freight; Japanese 125–140cc trail bikes are $3,599–$4,449 plus $300–$340.
- Full-size 250cc and 450cc motocross bikes: $8,599 to $11,649, plus a $600–$690 destination or freight charge. Two-stroke enduro bikes run $11,590–$12,049.
- Costs after checkout: freight or a destination charge ($0–$400), a helmet and boots, and in some states an off-road registration.
- What a higher price mostly buys: adjustable suspension, fuel injection, a dealer network and resale value. It does not make a bike a better first bike.
A new dirt bike costs from $279.99 for a 40cc kids bike to about $12,000 for a full-size race or enduro bike, before freight and destination. Most first bikes land in one of two brackets: a bike sold online and shipped to your door, about $280–$1,550 with freight, or a Japanese trail bike from a dealer, about $2,100–$4,800 with the destination charge. Three things set the price: the rider's size, which decides the engine and wheel size; where they will ride, from a backyard to a motocross track; and how the bike is sold. We checked every price below on the manufacturer's own US site, and FRP Moto's on our product pages, on October 13, 2026.

How Much Is a Kids Dirt Bike?
A new 40–50cc kids dirt bike costs $279.99 to about $2,200 with destination. Every gas bike in this table is a small single-cylinder bike built for a young rider. The spread comes from the brand, the brakes and gearbox, and how the bike is sold, more than from the engine size.
| Bike | Price | Engine | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| FRP Moto FX40 Ogemaw | $279.99 Basic / $299.99 Max, free shipping | 40cc four-stroke, pull start | Front and rear suspension and disc brakes, 20 mph, 132 lb rider limit, 60-day warranty |
| Razor MX350 | $349.99 | Electric | Razor lists a 140 lb maximum rider; an electric ride-on rather than a gas trail bike |
| Yamaha PW50 | $1,899 + $215 destination | 49cc two-stroke | Sold and set up by Yamaha dealers |
| Honda CRF50F | $1,899 + $300 destination | 49cc four-stroke | 6-month transferable limited warranty; sold by Honda dealers |
| KTM 50 SX | $5,099 + $425 freight | 49cc two-stroke | Closed-course competition bike for youth motocross |

What the FX40 price includes. The FRP Moto FX40 Ogemaw is $279.99 for the Basic and $299.99 for the Max, which adds a neck gaiter, gloves and goggles. Shipping is free. It is a 40cc four-stroke on straight pump gas (no oil mixing), with front and rear suspension, front and rear disc brakes, a 20 mph top speed and a 132 lb maximum rider load. It weighs 59 lb, arrives 85% pre-assembled and carries a 60-day warranty.
Where it stops. The FX40 rolls on 10-inch wheels and has no clutch to learn, so it is a first trail bike, not a race bike. The 132 lb rider limit is the hard line: go by that number rather than the rider's age, because kids the same age vary a lot. A rider past that weight, or tall enough to feel cramped, belongs on the next size up.
How Much Is a 125cc or 140cc Pit Bike?
A new 125–140cc pit bike or small trail bike costs $799.99 to $4,449 before freight or destination. It is the widest price band in the market, because two ways of building and selling the same size of bike meet here: bikes sold online and shipped in a crate, and Japanese bikes sold and set up by dealers.
| Bike | Price | Engine | How it is sold |
|---|---|---|---|
| FRP Moto FX125 | $799.99–$1,099.99 + $299.99–$399.99 freight | 125cc air-cooled four-stroke, 4-speed manual | Online, LTL freight to the curb; 1-year limited warranty |
| Apollo RFZ 125 models | About $900–$1,400 at online dealers | 125cc | Online dealers; Apollo publishes no US MSRP |
| FRP Moto FX140 | $1,149.99 + $399.99 freight | 140cc oil-cooled four-stroke, 4-speed manual | Online, LTL freight to the curb; 1-year limited warranty |
| SSR SR125R | $1,899 + destination | 125cc | SSR dealers; 30-day parts-only limited warranty |
| Honda CRF125F | $3,599 + $300 destination (Big Wheel $3,999) | 125cc four-stroke | Honda dealers; 6-month transferable limited warranty |
| Yamaha TT-R125LE | $3,599 + $340 destination | 125cc four-stroke | Yamaha dealers; 90-day limited warranty; not available in California |
| Kawasaki KLX140R / L / F | $3,799 / $4,099 / $4,449 + $315 destination | 140cc four-stroke | Kawasaki dealers; 6-month limited warranty |

FRP Moto FX125: four builds, one engine
The FX125 is a 125cc air-cooled four-stroke (Zongshen) making 8.7 hp at 7,500 rpm, with a 4-speed manual gearbox and wet multi-plate clutch, electric and kick start, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, a top speed of about 56 mph and a 265 lb maximum rider load. You choose a wheel size by the rider's height, then a Basic or Pro trim:
| Build | Price | Seat height | Bike weight | Rider limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FX125 14/12 Basic | $799.99 | 28.1 in | 150 lb | 265 lb |
| FX125 14/12 Pro | $899.99 | 28.1 in | 150 lb | 265 lb |
| FX125 17/14 Basic | $999.99 | 33.9 in | 163.9 lb | 265 lb |
| FX125 17/14 Pro | $1,099.99 | 33.9 in | 163.9 lb | 265 lb |
| FX140 (17/14) | $1,149.99 | 33.9 in | 170.9 lb | 265 lb |
Freight: FX125 $299.99–$399.99 depending on the build, FX140 $399.99, both by LTL freight to the curb. Prices and specs from the FX125 and FX140 product pages and FRP Moto's shipping page, October 13, 2026.
The 265 lb rating is high for the class and is the reason the 17/14 FX125 works for adults as well as teens. Every FX125 and FX140 box also includes gloves, goggles, anti-fog spray, a backpack, a hydration bladder, a tool kit and a carry bag, which is part of the first-year cost covered below.
Two verified FX125 owners, in their own words: "My 12 year old is loving this bike. Took no time for him to get the hang of the clutch and shifter." (Britney H., 5 stars) and "Grandson loves it but it wont stay running." (Terry S., 4 stars). The second one is the honest side of a crated bike: the first start-up and tune-up are on you, not on a dealer's service bay.
FX125 or FX140?
In the 17/14 build they share a chassis: the same 33.9-inch seat, the same 49.2-inch wheelbase and the same 265 lb rating. The difference is the engine. The FX140 is a 140cc oil-cooled four-stroke making 11.0 hp and 10.2 N·m against the FX125's 8.7 hp and 8.8 N·m, rated to climb 30° against 28°, with a top speed of about 65 mph. Oil cooling is what keeps that power steady on long climbs, hot days and hour-long sessions, where an air-cooled engine starts to fade. For short sessions in the yard, cooler weather or a lighter rider, the FX125 is enough. The step from a 17/14 FX125 to the FX140 is $50–$150 before freight.
Compare the four FX125 builds or see the FX140 140cc dirt bike.
How Much Is a Full-Size 250cc or 450cc Dirt Bike?
Full-size dirt bikes start around $4,700 for an air-cooled trail bike and pass $12,000 for a two-stroke enduro bike, before a destination or freight charge of $300–$690. FRP Moto doesn't build full-size bikes, so this section is here to complete the picture.
| Class | Bike | MSRP | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail | Yamaha TT-R230 | $4,699 + $340 | Air-cooled trail bike; not available in California |
| Trail | Honda CRF300F | $5,099 + $300 | Honda's current full-size trail bike |
| 250 motocross | Honda CRF250R | $8,599 + $600 | Motocross race bike |
| 250 motocross | Yamaha YZ250F | $9,099 + $675 | 30-day limited warranty |
| 250 motocross | KTM 250 SX-F | $10,699 + $690 freight | Closed-course competition only |
| 450 motocross | Honda CRF450R | $10,099 + $600 | Motocross race bike |
| 450 motocross | Yamaha YZ450F | $10,299 + $675 | Motocross race bike |
| 450 motocross | KTM 450 SX-F | $11,649 + $690 freight | Closed-course competition only |
| Enduro | Beta RR 300 Race | $11,590 | Two-stroke enduro |
| Enduro | KTM 300 XC-W | $11,949 + $690 freight | Two-stroke enduro |
| Enduro | Husqvarna TE 300 | $12,049 + $690 freight | Two-stroke enduro |
| Dual-sport | Kawasaki KLX300 | $5,649 + $650 | Street legal with a license plate |
| Dual-sport | Honda CRF300L | $5,749 + $600 | Street legal with a license plate |
Checked October 13, 2026 on the Yamaha, Honda, KTM, Husqvarna, Beta and Kawasaki US sites. Yamaha also sells Monster Energy editions of the YZ250F and YZ450F for $200 more.
Two details in this table matter for a first bike. Race bikes come with short warranties because they are built to be raced; Yamaha lists 30 days on the YZ250F. And a dual-sport is the only kind of dirt bike that can wear a license plate. An off-road dirt bike at any price, including every FRP Moto FX bike, is not street legal.
Why Are Some Dirt Bikes So Expensive?
Engine size explains less of the price than most people expect: a new 125cc bike can cost $799.99 or $3,599. The money goes to five places.
Suspension
Race bikes use forks and shocks you can tune for compression, rebound and preload, and that hardware is one of the most expensive parts of the bike. A trail or pit bike uses simpler suspension that soaks up roots and ruts at trail speed but is not built for big jumps. For a rider learning on private land, the simpler setup is enough; for a racer it is not.
Engine, fuel system and cooling
Fuel injection, liquid cooling and lighter internals cost more to build. You can see a smaller version of the same trade inside one lineup: the oil-cooled FX140 costs $50–$150 more than a 17/14 FX125, and what that buys is power that holds up on long climbs and hot days, not a different kind of bike.
How the bike is sold
A dealer bike carries a destination charge ($300 on a Honda CRF125F, $600–$690 on a full-size race bike) and arrives set up, with a local shop to service it. A bike sold online skips the showroom. The FX125 and FX140 ship in a crate by LTL freight for $299.99–$399.99 and you finish the assembly; the FX40 ships free and arrives 85% pre-assembled.
Warranty and parts
Warranty terms vary more than the prices suggest. On the manufacturers' own pages: Honda CRF50F and CRF125F, 6-month transferable limited; Kawasaki KLX140R, 6 months; Yamaha TT-R125LE, 90 days; Yamaha YZ250F, 30 days; SSR SR125R, 30 days, parts only. FRP Moto's FX125 and FX140 carry a 1-year limited warranty and the FX40 60 days. Parts matter as much as the warranty, and FRP Moto lists FX parts with prices on frpmoto.com (see the parts table below).
Resale value
Japanese bikes hold their value. J.D. Power lists a 2020 Honda CRF125F at an average retail value of $1,990 against its original $3,099 MSRP, and a 2020 Yamaha YZ250F at $5,060 against $8,199. Part of a dealer bike's higher price comes back when you sell it.

The part most price guides skip
For a new rider on private land, most of the extra money on an expensive bike buys things they will not use yet: race-tunable suspension and a dealer service department. What matters at every price is a bike that fits the rider, brakes that work, and replacement parts you can actually order when a lever snaps.
Where FRP Moto gives ground
- No showroom. You cannot sit on an FX bike before you buy it, so fit comes from the seat height and rider-limit numbers above.
- Curbside freight and final assembly are yours. FX125 and FX140 arrive by LTL freight to the curb after a scheduled delivery appointment, so plan on help getting the crate off the curb. The FX140 takes about 30–45 minutes to finish with the included tools; the FX40 arrives 85% pre-assembled.
- Not sold in California. FX bikes are not sold or shipped to California (Prop 65), and they are EPA off-road only, not street legal.
- Resale. Expect a Honda, Yamaha or Kawasaki to hold more of its value when it is time to sell.
What Does a Dirt Bike Really Cost in the First Year?
The sticker price is only part of the bill. Here is the first year for the same rider, a teen or adult on a 125cc trail bike, bought two different ways. Gear prices are entry-level items at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC.
| Item | FRP Moto FX125 17/14 Basic | Honda CRF125F | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bike | $999.99 | $3,599 | MSRP |
| Freight or destination | $299.99–$399.99 | $300 | FRP Moto ships by LTL freight to the curb; Honda's destination charge is paid at the dealer |
| Gloves and goggles | Included in the box | $28.87 | Entry MSR Axxis gloves $10.99 and VSN 2.0 goggles $17.88 |
| DOT helmet | $97.99 | $97.99 | Entry O'Neal 2 Series; needed at any price |
| Boots | $109.88 | $109.88 | Entry MSR M3X adult boots |
| Off-road registration | $0–$36.25 a year | $0–$36.25 a year | Depends on the state and where you ride (see the FAQ) |
| Sales tax and fees | Sales tax | Sales tax, plus any dealer setup or documentation fees | Varies by state and dealer |
| Total before tax and registration | $1,507.85–$1,607.85 | $4,135.74 |
Gear prices from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC on October 13, 2026; the lowest prices vary by size and some are closeout colors. FRP Moto also sells a 5-piece kids body armor set for $59.99 and riding goggles for $16.99.
What common replacement parts cost
The parts that break first are rarely the engine. A tip-over usually means a lever, a footpeg or a fender. These are FRP Moto's own parts prices on frpmoto.com:
| Part | Price | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Front brake lever | $13.99 | FX125, FX140 |
| Clutch lever set | $14.99 | FX125, FX140 |
| Clutch cable | $11.99 | FX125 17/14, FX140 |
| Footrest set (left or right) | $13.99 | FX125, FX140 |
| Front or rear brake set | $40.99 | FX125 17/14, FX140 |
| Front or rear fender | $28.99 | FX125, FX140 |
| Chain | $17.99 | FX40 |
| Air filter | $14.99 | FX40 |
| Front or rear tire | $80.99 | FX40 |
| Complete engine | $107.99 | FX40 |
Parts availability matters more than it looks on a spec sheet. When FRP Moto read 1,455 Amazon owner reviews of gas and electric mini bikes in August 2026, the lowest-rated topic across every brand was not the engine. It was owners who needed one small part and could not get it, at an average of 2.60 stars against 4.18 for all reviews.
Should You Buy a Used Dirt Bike Instead?
A used bike lowers the price up front, and Japanese bikes are the easiest to buy and sell used. J.D. Power lists a 2020 Honda CRF125F at $1,510–$1,990 retail and a 2020 Yamaha YZ250F at $3,845–$5,060. The risk is what you can't see, so check these five things before you pay:
- Start it cold. Ask the seller not to warm it up. Hard starting, smoke or knocking on a cold engine are the expensive problems.
- Check the chain and sprockets. Hooked sprocket teeth and a chain that lifts off the rear sprocket mean a drive-train replacement is coming.
- Look at the fork seals. Oil on the fork tubes means the seals are leaking.
- Look for cracks and bends. Check the frame, subframe and handlebar for welds, cracks or kinks from crashes.
- Match the VIN to the paperwork. A title or bill of sale whose VIN matches the frame protects you from buying a stolen bike.
Are Electric Dirt Bikes Cheaper Than Gas?
Not as a rule. A Razor MX350 is $349.99 and an MX650 $849.99, but those are lighter-duty electric ride-ons (Razor lists maximum rider weights of 140 lb and 220 lb). Full-size electric dirt bikes cost as much as gas ones: the Segway Xaber 300 is $5,299.99, a Sur-Ron Light Bee X lists around $4,500 at dealers (Sur-Ron publishes no US MSRP), and the Stark VARG MX 1.2 is $11,990. Electric saves on fuel and oil changes; gas refuels in minutes for a long day of riding. FRP Moto's FX bikes are all gas four-strokes that run on straight pump gas, with no oil mixing.
What Can You Get at Each Budget?
| Budget (new) | What it buys | Good for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | A 40cc gas kids bike or an electric ride-on: FRP Moto FX40 ($279.99–$299.99, free shipping), Razor MX350 ($349.99) | Young riders on private land, within the bike's weight limit (132 lb on the FX40) | Teens, adults, or anyone past the weight limit |
| $1,100–$1,600 with freight | A 125–140cc pit bike sold online: FRP Moto FX125 or FX140, Apollo RFZ 125 models | Teens and adults learning a clutch on trails and private land; riders up to 265 lb on the FX125 and FX140 | Racing, California, or buyers who want a dealer to set up and service the bike |
| $2,100–$4,800 with destination | A Japanese kids or youth trail bike from a dealer: Yamaha PW50 or TT-R110E, Honda CRF50F or CRF125F, Kawasaki KLX110R or KLX140R | Dealer setup and service, stronger resale value | Tight budgets; California for the Yamaha TT-R models |
| $5,000–$6,400 with destination | A full-size trail bike or a street-legal dual-sport: Yamaha TT-R230, Honda CRF300F, Kawasaki KLX300, Honda CRF300L | Adults, and riders who need a license plate | Kids and small teens |
| $9,200–$12,750 with destination | A 250 or 450 motocross bike, or a two-stroke enduro bike | Experienced riders and racers | A first bike for a new rider |
FAQ
How much is a dirt bike for a kid?
A new 40–50cc kids dirt bike costs $279.99 to about $2,200 including destination. The FRP Moto FX40 is $279.99–$299.99 with free shipping; a Yamaha PW50 or Honda CRF50F is $1,899 plus a $215–$300 destination charge. Youth race bikes such as the KTM 50 SX cost $5,099.
How much is a dirt bike for an adult?
An adult-size 125–140cc pit bike costs $999.99–$1,149.99 for an FRP Moto FX125 17/14 or FX140, plus freight, and $3,599–$4,449 for a Japanese 125–140cc trail bike before destination. Full-size trail and dual-sport bikes run $4,699–$5,749, and motocross and enduro bikes $8,599–$12,049, before destination.
How much does a 125cc dirt bike cost?
The FRP Moto FX125 is $799.99–$1,099.99 plus $299.99–$399.99 freight. Apollo RFZ 125 models list for about $900–$1,400 at online dealers, the SSR SR125R is $1,899, and the Honda CRF125F and Yamaha TT-R125LE are $3,599 each before destination.
How much is a 250cc dirt bike?
A 250cc motocross bike costs $8,599 (Honda CRF250R) to $10,699 (KTM 250 SX-F) before a $600–$690 destination or freight charge. For trail riding rather than racing, Honda's current full-size trail bike, the CRF300F, is $5,099.
Why are dirt bikes so expensive?
Most of the price goes to suspension, fuel injection and cooling, the dealer network and destination charge, warranty and parts support, and resale value. Engine size alone explains little: new 125cc bikes range from $799.99 to $3,599.
How much does it cost to ship a dirt bike?
FRP Moto ships the FX40 free, the FX125 for $299.99–$399.99 depending on the build, and the FX140 for $399.99, by LTL freight to the curb for the larger bikes. Dealer bikes carry a destination charge instead: $300 on Honda trail bikes, $315 on Kawasaki KLX140R models and $600–$690 on full-size race bikes.
Do you need to register a dirt bike?
It depends on the state and where you ride. Texas requires a $16 yearly OHV decal on public off-road land but not on most private land. Michigan requires a $26.25 ORV license plus a $10 trail permit on trails, but not on land you own. Ohio's BMV titles and registers off-highway motorcycles for three years at a time. Missouri charges $6 per vehicle per day in the Finger Lakes State Park ORV area. Check your own state's rules before the first ride.
What do you give up with a dirt bike under $1,500?
Mostly the dealer. There is no showroom to sit on the bike first, final assembly and the first tune-up are yours, and resale value is lower than a Honda or Yamaha. FRP Moto's FX bikes are also not sold in California and are EPA off-road only. The spec sheet does not have to suffer: the FX125 and FX140 have a 4-speed manual, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear and a 265 lb rider rating.
Where to go from here
Pick the size first, from the rider's weight and height, then the budget. If the rider is a child under 132 lb, start with the FX40 kids dirt bike. If they are a teen or adult ready to learn a clutch, compare the FX125 and FX140, or see all FRP Moto gas dirt bikes and pit bikes side by side.
Every FRP Moto FX bike is EPA off-road only and not street legal. Ride on private land or a designated off-road area, wear a helmet and full protective gear, and keep an adult with young riders.
